Removing urine scale? Try these 4 household remedies

It’s a common problem: brown stains in the toilet. This is called 'urine scale' and can be tough to remove. Urine scale resembles limescale and leaves visible brown spots in the bowl. The cause? Our urine contains substances like phosphorus, potassium, sodium, calcium, and magnesium, which together form this unwanted buildup.

Easily remove urine scale
Removing urine scale might seem like a daunting task, but with the right cleaning agents, it’s manageable. There are plenty of products on the market that work quickly and effectively. Don’t have any specialized cleaning products at home? No problem! Here are three alternative household remedies that can also help remove urine scale. Keep in mind, though, that these might not be as powerful as specific cleaning products.

Cola
Pour about 450 milliliters of regular cola (not diet or zero) over the urine scale in the toilet bowl. Let the cola sit; the longer, the better! After at least an hour, you can scrub away the brown stains and flush the toilet.
Cleaning vinegar
Cleaning vinegar is a classic in the fight against urine scale, and almost everyone has it at home. Before going to bed, pour a generous amount of cleaning vinegar into the toilet. Let it work overnight, and in the morning, use a toilet brush to remove the stains. Then simply flush.
Baking soda
Baking soda is a versatile cleaning agent. Sprinkle a cup of baking soda into the toilet and let it sit for 15 minutes. Then scrub with a pumice stone toilet brush to remove the buildup. For stubborn stains, you can make a mixture of baking soda and cleaning vinegar. The fizzing of this mixture helps loosen the brown stains.
Dishwasher tablets
If you have a dishwasher, you probably have dishwasher tablets at home. Drop two into the toilet bowl and let them work for a few hours. Flush, brush the bowl clean, and flush again with fresh water.

With these simple remedies, you can effectively remove stubborn urine scale without harsh chemicals.
