Watering globe for outdoor plants: does it work and which one do you choose?
Watering globes are not just for houseplants. They are also an excellent watering system for the garden, balcony planters and the vegetable garden — especially during warm summers or while on holiday. But not every type of globe is equally suitable for outdoor use.
Challenges for watering globes outdoors
- Faster evaporation — wind and sun cause the soil to dry out more quickly, making the globe empty faster
- Larger water volume needed — outdoor plants often consume more water than houseplants
- Direct sunlight — clear glass is dangerous in the sun — read more about the fire hazard of glass watering globes
Which type works best outdoors?
Terracotta watering globe (olla method)
The ideal choice as a watering system for the garden and borders. Terracotta releases water evenly and slowly through its pores. Bury it mostly in the ground for optimal effect. More about this type in our terracotta vs. frosted plastic comparison.
Frosted plastic watering globe
Suitable for balcony and terrace. The Minismus frosted globe scatters light and is therefore safe in light-rich environments. No fire risk, even on a sunny balcony.

Tips for outdoor use
- Use a larger size or multiple globes per planter as a drip system for outdoor plants
- Refill more often during warm periods
- Combine with mulch or a covering layer to reduce evaporation
- With frosted plastic you can place the globe anywhere without worrying about the sun
Watering globe for the vegetable garden
In the vegetable garden the terracotta olla method is the most effective as part of a watering system for the garden. By burying it deep, the water reaches the roots directly. For larger vegetable beds, multiple ollas or a drip system per row is the best solution.
