Bathroom Shelf Guide: Where to Put One, What Size to Choose and How to Mount It
A well-placed bathroom shelf solves more than a storage problem — it reorganises how the room functions. The right shelf in the right place means toiletries off the edge of the bath, candles not balanced on the cistern and the daily-use items within reach without opening a cabinet. The wrong shelf — wrong size, wrong location, wrong mounting — stays empty or falls off the wall.
This guide covers every decision involved in choosing and mounting a bathroom shelf.
Where to Put a Bathroom Shelf
The most useful shelf positions in a typical bathroom:
- Above the toilet — the space between the cistern and the ceiling is almost always unused. A shelf here adds storage without taking floor space or requiring anything near the wet zones. Ideal for spare rolls, candles, plants and items used infrequently.
- Inside the shower — a shower shelf replaces the pile of products on the floor or bath edge. Position it at a comfortable height for the primary user — around shoulder height. The Minismus Shower Shelf Basket mounts with adhesive or screws and holds shampoo, conditioner and body wash comfortably.
- Beside the mirror or sink — a small shelf beside or below the mirror gives you a surface for items used at the sink: moisturiser, cotton pads, a small plant or a diffuser. The Minismus Floating Wall Shelf with Anti-Fall Edge (30 x 9 cm) is the right scale for this position — compact enough not to crowd the mirror but large enough to be useful.
What Size Shelf Do You Need?
For inside the shower: 25 to 35 cm wide is the practical range. Too narrow and bottles tip over; too wide and it becomes a ledge that collects water and soap residue.
For above the toilet or beside the mirror: 25 to 40 cm wide, 8 to 12 cm deep. Deep enough to hold standard-size products without them overhanging the front edge.
Anti-Fall Edges: Why They Matter
A shelf with a raised front lip — an anti-fall edge — prevents items from sliding off when the door slams or during normal use. This is especially important in the shower (where shampoo bottles are heavy) and beside the mirror (where glass or ceramic items might be placed). The Minismus Floating Wall Shelf has a raised front edge specifically for this reason.
Mounting: Adhesive vs. Screws
For light items (candles, cotton pads, small plants), adhesive mounting is entirely adequate on smooth tiles or painted walls. For heavier loads — multiple shampoo bottles or anything over 2 kg — screw mounting provides more reliable long-term support. The shower shelf basket supports both options so you can choose based on your wall type.
